1st Team & U18s session
Focus:
- Finishing in the final 3rd
- Build up play
- Accuracy and details of passing
- Off ball movements.
- Working with the attacking team only
Time: 60 mins
Set up: 7 v 8 2/3rds of the pitch x1 full size goal, x3 9-a-side goals
Issues: No GKs
Solution: use a 9-a-side goal inside a full size goal. Goals only count when scored outside the 9-a-side goal.
Attacking movements:
- Timing of runs
Ensure the runs are late and quick into the box to reduce the possibility of players being picked up and marked. Player will to need to generate power as their forward momentum will provide this. Attackers to concentrate on making good connection with the ball, whether with head or foot.
- Primary attackers (9 &10) to disguise their runs
To drag defenders out of position if they are playing a man for man strategy and further reduce attackers being marked.
- Attackers to be on the Diagonal
Primary attackers to be on the diagonal level on out swinging crosses and opposite for in
swinging to maximise points of contact/success rate.
- Front post
Ensure players do not drift in-front of the front post as this will make it difficult to generate a scoring opportunity. If occurs, player to spin off into the 6y box for possible seconds shots.
- Pressure
Create situations that forces players to receive the ball under pressure. Player MUST be able to receive the ball under high pressure, deal with the pressure and make educated and calculated decisions under pressure.
- Overloads
Can the players identify overloads in our favour and force the ball into those areas
- The bounce
Can we use the ‘bounced ball’ movement to drag defenders out of position to create gaps behind them?
- Technical
Watch for individual technical decision making. Are they using the right technical detail at the right time?
Transition:
If defenders win the ball, how to win the ball back in the final third:
-Triggers movements
Attacking team to be alert and reactive to when the opposition win the ball.
-Individual movements
Speak and plan with each player when, when, how fast do they re-group and re-engage in any given area on the pitch. Speak to the player to give them an understanding how this is a risk and reward situation.
Press, cover, balance and support! Who does what and when?
