Kewford Eagles FC - Goalkeeper Warm up

A Goalkeeper warm up for Kewford Eagles FC.

A modern day GK warm up that covers all majors techniques that the GKs will face during the match.

I sent out last week the Specific GK warm up for your GKs, I want to now add additional info that you need to pass onto your GKs during the warm up.

A specific GK warm up is also not just to get them physically prepared but also mentally.

In terms of,

Weather conditions!
Whats the condition of the pitch?

Dry and hard? so the ball will bounce more.

Wet? so the ball will skid off the surface and come much faster as the ball skips off the ground!

Muddy? the ball will not bounce and will get held up on the floor.

Sunny? blinded by the sun!

Windy? across the pitch or with or against, this will have an effect on the kicking techniques.

Do you instruct your GK kick the ball at a flatter trajectory? Do you a as team play out into the 1st and 2nd lines only?

How does the first and second half of the match change?

So a warm up at increasingly  level/age has now become much more complex and can highly effect the GK and their game if you don't take all this elements into consideration as they develop.

As a coach try to get into a good habit of giving these details to your GK every game and question them during the warm up too:

“So what can you tell me about the pitch today?”
“How could this affect you and your game today?”
“What do you need to be aware of?”
“Do you need to change any technical detail when dealing with this…..shots on the floor? Kicking techniques?” And so on.
Always ask open ended questions so you can receive the answer in more of a conversation rather than “Yes and No” answers.
