How to coach, how to win the ball

  1. Acceleration and speed

  2. Which side does the player approach. Can the player be forced wide to the sideline?

  3. When does the player applied the brakes? Working distance.

  4. Player needs to get low, bend the knees and lower the centre of gravity to keep balance

  5. How does the player jockey the player? Spins on the back foot.

  6. How far does the defender jockey the player for? When does the player execute the tackle?

  7. How does the player tackle? Which foot?

  8. What is the players body shape like? Is it too square, is the player flat footed?

  9. After the ball is won what is the player first touch like? Big touch into space? Close to feet?

The key to a great coach is the ability to engage with the players...

“Don’t bore them” keeping the overall session the same
“Don’t scare them” don’t give them too much coaching detail all at once

 

Each of the blacks arrows below, interpret these as time to give you chance to demo the technique then more importantly give the players ago at practicing the technique in between each block of information.
